Morocco to Invest $8 Billion for 85% 5G Coverage by 2030
Morocco is set to embark on an ambitious digital transformation journey, committing an impressive MAD 80 billion, equivalent to $8 billion, towards the nationwide deployment of 5G technology. This significant investment aims to achieve a remarkable 85% population coverage by the year 2030. The announcement underscores the Moroccan government’s strategic focus on accelerating its digital infrastructure, a key component of its broader vision for economic and social development. This landmark decision was revealed during a recent board meeting of the National Telecommunications Regulatory Agency (ANRT) in Rabat, presided over by Head of Government Aziz Akhannouch.
Charting the Course for a Connected Future
The comprehensive 5G rollout plan is slated to commence implementation by the close of 2025, with major urban centers earmarked to receive initial 5G connectivity. This strategic phased approach is an integral part of the overarching “Morocco Digital 2030” strategy, designed to propel the nation’s digital capabilities forward. During the ANRT meeting, Director General Azzelarab Hassibi provided an overview of the current telecommunications landscape, highlighting Morocco’s robust digital foundation. He reported that mobile phone services in the country currently cater to 57 million subscribers, while the number of internet users stands at approximately 40 million. This translates to an impressive 90% internet penetration rate, a figure that significantly surpasses the average for the African continent, positioning Morocco as a leader in digital connectivity within the region.
This substantial investment in 5G infrastructure signifies Morocco’s dedication to fostering a highly connected society and a competitive digital economy. By expanding access to high-speed internet, the Kingdom aims to unlock new opportunities for innovation, enhance public services, and drive sustainable growth across various sectors. This strategic move is poised to solidify Morocco’s position as a digital hub in Africa, paving the way for advanced technological adoption and improved quality of life for its citizens.
