Mexican Shoppers Allege Theft and Poor Service from Shein and Temu Delivery Partner

The booming popularity of online retail in Mexico, fueled by giants like Shein and Temu, is now being shadowed by serious concerns over package security and customer service. A rising number of Mexican consumers report receiving unsealed packages with missing items, and a key delivery partner, J&T Express, is frequently cited for unresponsive support. These issues are eroding trust in the fast-growing e-commerce sector.

Unpacking the Delivery Discrepancies

Noelia Prado, residing in Tepotzotlán, south of Mexico City, recently experienced this frustrating ordeal firsthand with her Shein order. Her package, containing nine garments worth approximately $52, arrived visibly unsealed and re-taped, with three items missing. What followed for Prado was an arduous, weeks-long effort to locate her missing goods. The Shein application instructed her to contact the local logistics company. This led her to J&T Express, a global last-mile delivery provider that handles shipments for major Chinese e-commerce platforms such as Shein and Temu. Despite multiple attempts via WhatsApp messages and numerous phone calls to J&T Express’s customer support line, Prado received no response. Exhausted by the fruitless chase, she has since given up, now awaiting a refund approval from Shein. This troubling incident is particularly noteworthy given that Shein and Temu ranked as the most downloaded applications in 2023, signifying a massive volume of transactions and a critical need for reliable delivery services and robust customer support.

This pattern of alleged package theft and the evident struggle for customer recourse highlights a significant gap in service quality and accountability within the rapidly expanding e-commerce ecosystem in Mexico. For a growing number of consumers, the promise of convenient online shopping is being undermined by financial losses and considerable frustration. Platforms and their logistics partners must urgently address these systemic issues to safeguard consumer trust and ensure a seamless, secure online shopping experience.
