Kenya Joins Broadband Push with EU Funding

Kenya is set to be a major beneficiary of the European Union’s (EU) significant investment in expanding broadband access across Africa. The EU is allocating a substantial sum of $330 million (€300 million) to improve digital infrastructure on the continent, with Kenya earmarked for a portion of these funds. This initiative highlights the EU’s commitment to supporting Africa’s digital transformation and fostering economic growth through improved connectivity.

Details of the EU Broadband Initiative

The EU Ambassador to Kenya, Henriette Geiger, announced the details of this expansive initiative at the launch of the Africa Broadband Mapping Systems (Africa-BB-Maps) project in Nairobi. Kenya will specifically receive a portion of the $16.5 million (€15 million) dedicated to the Africa-BB-Maps project, which runs from 2025 to 2028. This project, spearheaded by the United Nations, aims to map broadband availability and infrastructure across eleven African nations, including Kenya. Additionally, Kenya will benefit from the expansion of the subsea blue cable project, which will extend its reach from Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, and Tanzania. This project aims to improve the quality of internet access by connecting 1,000 primary schools in Kenya with broadband.

In conclusion, the EU’s investment underscores the importance of digital inclusion in driving socio-economic development in Kenya. This collaborative effort to map broadband infrastructure and expand connectivity will contribute to a more connected and digitally empowered future for Kenya and the eleven participating African nations.
