Ghana Set to Revamp NITA to Propel Digital Economy Forward

Ghana’s government is embarking on a significant initiative to bolster its digital economy, aiming to establish the nation as a leading digital trade hub within Africa. This commitment was unveiled during the 2025 National ICT Week Celebration in Accra on August 26, 2025, emphasizing a strategic focus on technological advancements and digital transformation to drive economic growth and competitiveness.

Key Reforms and Objectives

A central element of this plan is the planned transformation of the National Information Technology Agency (NITA). The government intends to reform NITA into an independent digital regulator. This newly empowered entity will possess expanded authority to oversee and harmonize the country’s rapidly evolving digital landscape. This regulatory shift is designed to cultivate a more streamlined and efficient digital ecosystem. Furthermore, the government plans to introduce the Innovations and Start-up Bill, which will provide incentives and support for local entrepreneurs and businesses. Deputy Minister of Communications, Digital Technology and Innovation, Mohammed Adam Sukparu, highlighted that these initiatives aim to digitize government services, stimulate private sector innovation, and foster the growth of fintech, alongside the participation of SMEs in e-commerce and digital trade across the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

The reforms signal Ghana’s dedication to fully integrating technology into its economy, fostering innovation and contributing to regional economic integration through the AfCFTA.
