Yabatech Receives N200 Million Grant to Develop Solar-Powered Aquaponics System
The Yaba College of Technology (Yabatech), a leading institution in Nigeria, has been awarded a substantial grant of N200 million (€117,000) by the European Union to develop an innovative, solar-powered integrated aquaponics system. This project signifies a significant stride toward enhancing food security within Nigeria, leveraging technology to optimize food production. The core objective of this initiative is to boost the output of catfish, while concurrently cultivating vegetables and maize.
Project AQUACLEC: Sustainable Food Production through Innovation
The grant, secured under the project name ‘Integrated Aquaponics System for Sustainable Catfish Production and Dual-Crop Cultivation of Leafy Vegetables and Corn (AQUACLEC),’ will facilitate the development and implementation of a cutting-edge aquaponics system powered by solar energy. This system integrates aquaculture (raising fish) and hydroponics (growing plants without soil), creating a symbiotic environment where the waste produced by the fish nourishes the plants, and the plants, in turn, filter the water for the fish. According to Yabatech’s spokesman, Mr. Adekunle Adams, the project aims to revolutionize food production by increasing catfish yields alongside vegetable and maize farming, providing a sustainable and efficient agricultural model. The funds come from the European Union’s Horizon Europe programme.
