Home Connectivity: Why Operators Should Take Back Control

In a recent analysis published earlier this August, Sylwia Kechiche, Principal Analyst at Opensignal, highlights the crucial role that operator-provided equipment – often referred to as “gateways” or modems – can play in significantly improving the broadband experience for users. This is especially relevant in the context of growing internet usage and the increasing need for reliable home connectivity across the African continent.

Advantages of Operator-Provided Equipment

Drawing on performance data from US providers like AT&T and Verizon, Kechiche’s analysis reveals that subscribers utilizing their provider’s official equipment experience more reliable and stable connections than those using their own hardware. The differences are substantial, with improvements of up to 88% in reliability and 35% in consistent quality for AT&T users. This discrepancy is attributed to several factors. Firstly, the superior technical specifications of the equipment included in premium packages, such as Wi-Fi 6/7 capabilities, mesh networking technologies, and integrated monitoring tools, contribute to better performance. Secondly, operators can remotely monitor, diagnose, and optimize the home network for a smoother user experience. This capability is vital for addressing connectivity issues in a timely manner, a critical consideration for emerging markets in Africa, where internet access is often less stable.

In conclusion, Kechiche underscores that operators providing and managing the home connectivity equipment can significantly enhance user experience. Investing in advanced equipment and proactive network management not only improves the quality of service but also provides an opportunity for operators to differentiate their offerings.
