Algiers Relies Heavily on Desalination for Water Supply in 2024

The Algerian water and sanitation company, Société des eaux et de l’assainissement d’Alger (Seaal), recently released its 2024 performance report. The data highlights the crucial role of desalination in ensuring water access in the Algiers and Tipasa regions, revealing a significant reliance on this technology to meet the increasing water demands of the population. This represents a significant shift for the region and highlights the growing importance of sustainable water management in North Africa.

Water Source Breakdown: Desalination Leading the Way

Seaal managed to mobilize a total of 387 million cubic meters of water in 2024 across the Algiers and Tipasa wilayas (provinces), where it manages water distribution and supply. A substantial 320 million cubic meters were allocated to Algiers province. Of this, a considerable 51% came from seawater desalination plants. The remaining supply for Algiers comprised of 27% from groundwater sources, and 22% from surface water resources like rivers and lakes. In the Tipasa province, 67 million cubic meters of water were provided. Here, 38% came from desalination, 32% from groundwater, and 30% from dams. The average daily water consumption across Algiers and Tipasa reached approximately one million cubic meters. Seaal is also responsible for supplying between 20,000 and 30,000 cubic meters of water per day to the neighboring province of Blida.

The increasing reliance on desalination in Algiers and Tipasa reflects the challenges of water scarcity and drought facing the region. This reliance also signals an investment in the future of water sustainability and the ongoing need for innovations in water management strategies and technology within an African context.
