Tunisia: Heavy Rainfall Expected in the Central Regions
The National Institute of Meteorology (INM) has issued a weather bulletin warning of severe thunderstorms and locally heavy rainfall expected to hit central Tunisia, starting Friday afternoon. This weather event poses risks to vulnerable regions and infrastructure. Citizens and local authorities are advised to take precautions and stay informed about the evolving weather patterns.
Areas at Risk and Expected Weather Conditions
The INM’s forecast indicates that the initial thunderstorms will begin Friday afternoon, accompanied by wind gusts that could temporarily exceed 70 km/h. The areas most likely to be impacted are Kasserine, Siliana, Kairouan, Zaghouan, and the northern part of Sidi Bouzid. The heavy rainfall is predicted to spread by Saturday afternoon, reaching the western highlands of the north and center, before moving towards the eastern parts of the country. The areas most at risk from this weather pattern include Kasserine, Sidi Bouzid, the southern part of Siliana, Kairouan, and Zaghouan. Rainfall accumulation could range from 30 to 50 mm, with a possibility of localized hail. The INM warns of the potential for strong gusts, exceeding 80 km/h during thunderstorms, and the associated risk of localized flooding due to the heavy downpours. Temperatures will range between 29°C in the north and 44°C, further amplifying the intensity of the storm.
In the context of African tech, these weather events can disrupt essential services like internet connectivity and electricity supply in the affected regions. This highlights the need for robust infrastructure and preparedness measures to mitigate the impact of such occurrences.
