EFL Classroom Tech: Nick Cherkas’ Workshop Examined in Africa

Technology in the EFL Classroom: A Reflection on Nick Cherkas’ Workshop

In a rapidly evolving world, the integration of technology into education is no longer optional, particularly in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classrooms. This shift is especially relevant in countries like Morocco, where access to technology and its effective pedagogical implementation can significantly enhance language learning outcomes. This blog post reflects on a 2011 workshop led by Nick Cherkas at the ENS in Rabat, focusing on the rationale and methods for incorporating technology into EFL instruction. This workshop aimed to provide practical insights into the relationship between language learning and the use of technology.

Exploring the “Why” and “How” of Technology in EFL

The core of Cherkas’ workshop centered on two fundamental questions: Why should educators utilize technology, and how can it be effectively implemented in the EFL classroom? The workshop participants, including teacher trainees, engaged in a discussion exploring the various motivations for integrating Information and Communication Technology (ICT) into teaching practices. Cherkas highlighted that computers and language teaching had evolved in tandem, becoming increasingly important resources for language learning. The workshop participants came to appreciate several key reasons for leveraging technology in EFL contexts, from enhancing student engagement through interactive activities to providing access to authentic language materials and diverse cultural perspectives. In an African context, this also offers an opportunity for students to connect with global communities, expanding their horizons. The workshop offered both the practical and theoretical aspects of technology integration.
