Safaricom’s B-Live: A Time-Based Data Bundle Trial

Safaricom, a leading telecommunications provider in Kenya, is currently trialing a new internet product called B-Live. This innovative data bundle deviates from the standard per-MB or per-GB model, offering customers internet access for a set duration. This approach caters to users seeking short, concentrated bursts of online activity, representing a shift in how Kenyans might access and consume mobile data.

Diving into B-Live: Features and Limitations

During this 50-day trial phase, Safaricom customers can purchase B-Live bundles at specific time increments. Options include 1 hour of browsing for KES 20, 3 hours for KES 50, and 6 hours for KES 150. B-Live is specifically designed for users needing occasional internet connectivity. This could be beneficial for students streaming lectures, content creators uploading their work, or casual users catching up on social media updates. However, a significant limitation is the disabled tethering feature. Customers cannot share their B-Live connection via hotspot, which may make it less appealing for users who frequently tether multiple devices, such as in households or small businesses.

In comparison to standard bundles from other Kenyan telcos, B-Live aims to carve a niche for itself by emphasizing convenience and flexibility for light internet users. Although Safaricom faces competition from other telcos, they have a strong network quality advantage that could make B-Live a compelling option.
