Gara Djebilet Iron Ore Project: Sonarem and MCC Discuss Ore Processing Development
The development of Algeria’s significant iron ore resources at Gara Djebilet in the Tindouf region is the focus of ongoing discussions between the Algerian state-owned mining group Sonarem and the Chinese company MCC (China Metallurgical Group Corporation). These talks center on crucial aspects of the project, primarily the processing of the iron ore and the reduction of its phosphorus content, essential for high-quality steel production. Accelerating Ore Processing and Phosphorus Reduction
Belkacem Soltani, the CEO of Sonarem, recently hosted a delegation from MCC led by Jia Ningchuan, Director General of MCC International. Also present was Reda Belhadj, the Director General of the National Iron and Steel Company (Feral). The primary goal of the meeting was to explore cooperative efforts to advance the Gara Djebilet project, specifically focusing on improving iron ore processing techniques. Soltani emphasized the importance of incorporating modern methods to diminish the phosphorus content in the ore. This is a critical factor for creating high-grade steel. He proposed establishing joint Algerian-Chinese working groups to expedite the technical trials locally, aiming to accelerate the project’s overall timeline. This approach underscores the commitment to utilizing technology transfer and collaboration in driving forward resource exploitation in Algeria.
The meeting highlights the shared interest in maximizing the value of the Gara Djebilet iron ore deposits.
