Ghana’s DVLA to Launch New Vehicle Number Plates in 2026

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) of Ghana is set to introduce new vehicle number plates starting January 1, 2026. This move, announced by DVLA Chief Executive Officer Julius Neequaye Kotey, aims to modernize vehicle registration and enhance traceability across the nation, leveraging technological advancements within the Ghanaian transport sector. The changes represent a significant update to the current system, aiming for improved efficiency and ease of identification.

Enhanced Regional Identification and Tracking

The redesigned number plates will feature a new format, prioritizing regional and area identification. The new system will use a regional code at the top and an area code at the end of each plate. This is designed to allow easier tracing of vehicles to their respective areas of registration. According to Kotey, an example of the new format would be “GR 222 AD,” where “AD” represents Adenta. This change is part of the DVLA’s broader strategy to upgrade tracking technology and streamline vehicle registration processes across Ghana. The legal preparations for the rollout have been finalized, with the implementation date set for January 1, 2026. The initiative will also eliminate the existing practice of placing the year of registration at the end of the number plate, a detail explained by Kotey during an interview on Channel One’s Face to Face program on August 19, 2025.

The introduction of these new number plates signifies a commitment to improving Ghana’s vehicle registration system, potentially reducing vehicle-related crimes. The new system seems to represent technological advancement within the DVLA, which will enhance the tracking capabilities. The focus on regional identification should also contribute to better organization and management of vehicle data, thereby, helping improve transport efficiency in the country.
