NCAA Grounds Flight Mode Reliance: New Phone Rules for Nigerian Flights
The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has announced a significant shift in in-flight mobile phone usage regulations, moving away from the long-held reliance on “flight mode.” Passengers on Nigerian flights will now be required to completely switch off their mobile phones and other portable electronic devices during takeoff and landing. This new directive aims to enhance safety during these critical phases of flight.
Stricter Enforcement of Mobile Device Usage
Captain Chris Najomo, the head of the NCAA, announced the updated regulations in Abuja, emphasizing the critical need for strict adherence. He instructed all airlines operating in Nigeria to update their operational manuals to reflect this new policy. According to Najomo, the instruction is that “All mobile phones, I repeat, all mobile phones and other portable devices should be switched off during the critical phases of flight. Switched off.” This move follows a reported incident on an Ibom Air flight involving a passenger who allegedly refused to switch off her phone, leading to a dispute with a flight attendant.
The new regulation signals a stricter approach to ensuring passenger compliance with safety protocols. By mandating that devices be completely powered down during takeoff and landing, the NCAA aims to mitigate any potential risks associated with electronic interference and ensure a safer flying environment for all.
