NCC Remains Confident in Achieving 70% Broadband Penetration Target by 2025
With the National Broadband Plan (NBP) 2020–2025 rapidly approaching its December 2025 expiry, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) maintains its steadfast belief that the ambitious goal of 70% broadband penetration across the nation is still attainable. Despite only four months remaining on the plan, the regulatory body is optimistic, even as industry indicators and on-ground realities highlight significant challenges. Obstacles such as pervasive fiber optic cable vandalism, a noticeable decline in new subscriptions, and a fluctuating investor confidence underscore the difficult path ahead for Nigeria’s digital transformation.
Charting the Course: NCC’s Strategy for Digital Inclusion
Addressing stakeholders at the recent African Peering and Interconnection Forum (AfPIF) held in Lagos, Aminu Maida, the Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, whose remarks were delivered by Abraham Oshadami, Executive Commissioner of Technical Services, articulated the commission’s renewed commitment. Maida affirmed, “We are targeting 70% broadband penetration by the end of this year through strategic pricing frameworks and incentives.” He further elaborated on the NCC’s multi-pronged approach to bolster Nigeria’s digital infrastructure. This includes actively facilitating crucial investments in the deployment of fibre optic cables, accelerating 5G technology rollout, and expanding connectivity to underserved rural areas. Highlighting an ongoing foundational project, Maida reminded attendees of the familiar 90,000-kilometer fibre initiative, emphasizing the commission’s continuous efforts to expand this vital digital backbone to ensure widespread internet access and digital inclusion across Nigeria.
The NCC’s resolve to meet this critical broadband target underscores its dedication to advancing Nigeria’s digital economy. Despite the formidable hurdles of infrastructure damage, subscriber growth challenges, and the need to attract more capital, the commission’s strategic initiatives and focus on expanding the digital backbone offer a glimmer of hope. Achieving 70% broadband penetration would be a monumental step towards solidifying Nigeria’s position in Africa’s digital landscape, driving innovation, and unlocking vast economic opportunities for its citizens.
