US Visa Applications: Nigerian Applicants Now Required to Provide Social Media Handles

The United States Mission in Nigeria has recently implemented a new requirement for visa applicants, mandating the inclusion of their social media usernames as part of the application process. This change is part of the broader social media verification program for foreign nationals seeking entry into the United States. This impacts all Nigerians applying for various visa types, highlighting the increasing emphasis on online presence as a factor in visa decisions.

Mandatory Social Media Disclosure: What Nigerian Applicants Need to Know

According to the U.S. Mission Nigeria, applicants are now obligated to provide their social media usernames for all accounts they have used within the past five years. This information is to be entered within the DS-160 form, the standard online application form used by the U.S. Department of State for all non-immigrant visa applications. This includes visas for tourism, business, education, and fiancé(e) visas. The Mission has emphasized the importance of accuracy, stating that any incorrect or incomplete information provided within the application can lead to disqualification. Applicants are, therefore, advised to carefully review and verify all details before submitting their applications. This requirement underscores the significance of digital footprints in the visa application process for Nigerian citizens and highlights the need for digital hygiene.
