Can African Banks Step Up to Fund Startups?

Africa’s burgeoning startup ecosystem has primarily relied on external funding sources for years. Venture capital firms and development finance institutions (DFIs) have been the primary drivers of growth, while many local commercial banks have maintained a cautious stance, often choosing to stay on the periphery. This funding strategy was sustainable when global markets were flush with liquidity and grants were readily available. However, the current landscape is shifting. With venture capital investments slowing down, DFIs becoming more selective, and many promising founders struggling to secure capital, particularly those outside of popular sectors, the future of the African innovation economy is at stake. If Africa is committed to a strong and sustainable innovation ecosystem, its banks need to evolve from passive observers to active partners.

Banks as Co-Architects of Innovation

Encouragingly, there are signs of this shift already underway. In late July, Sun King, a leader in off-grid solar solutions, successfully closed a $156 million securitisation deal. This transaction, primarily supported by commercial banks, including ABSA, Citi, Co-operative Bank of Kenya, KCB, and Stanbic Kenya, marks the largest bank-led securitisation in Sub-Saharan Africa, excluding South Africa. This financial arrangement will facilitate the financing of approximately 1.4 million solar products. This deal highlights the growing potential for African banks to play a crucial role in funding and fostering the growth of innovative companies.

In conclusion, the evolving economic conditions require a more diversified and resilient approach to funding African startups. The demonstrated commitment from leading commercial banks, as seen in the Sun King deal, presents a promising path forward. By actively participating in the funding ecosystem, African banks can significantly contribute to the sustainable growth of the continent’s innovation economy and future development.
