Everyone Has A Smartphone But We’re Not Using Them Fully

Smartphones are ubiquitous in Kenya, gleaming in the hands of people from all walks of life, including boda boda riders, farmers, students, and traders. However, a significant gap exists between the potential of these devices and how they are actually utilized. This gap stems primarily from the cost of data, which limits users’ ability to fully explore their smartphone’s capabilities.

The Data Dilemma: Limiting Access and Innovation

Consider James, a boda boda rider in Nairobi, who relies on his smartphone for essential tasks. He uses it to communicate with customers, receive mobile payments, and occasionally unwind with some TikTok. His phone is fast, connected to 4G, and provides crucial support. However, the high cost of data bundles severely restricts his usage. Watching a football match highlight or streaming music is often out of the question. As James explained, “The bundles disappear too quickly.” This scenario highlights a common challenge faced by millions of Kenyans, where the cost of data makes accessing the full potential of their devices a luxury, rather than a standard. According to the Communications Authority, Kenya has 42.3 million smartphone users, but many are tethered by the fear of exhausting their data allowances, thus limiting their access to information, entertainment, and educational resources.

This underutilization of smartphones represents a lost opportunity for innovation and economic growth.

The impact of these limitations goes beyond individual users. A broader, more affordable access to data can foster a stronger digital ecosystem and drive economic growth.
