Minerals Commission Equips Blue Water Guards with Crucial Knowledge in Takoradi
The Minerals Commission, as part of its commitment to responsible mining practices, recently hosted a career development orientation workshop for blue water guards. This initiative, held in Takoradi, aimed to bolster the guards’ skills and deepen their understanding of their critical responsibilities within the mining sector. The two-day event focused on providing essential training to enhance their effectiveness in upholding mining regulations.
Enhancing Skills for Responsible Mining Practices
The orientation, which brought together selected community heads of the blue water guards from the Western and Western North regions, covered several key areas. Participants received in-depth training on the Mining Cadastre Administration System (MCAS) and its associated processing cycle. This included practical sessions on navigating the Ghana Mining Repository, a crucial resource for accessing mining information. The core objective was to empower the guards with the tools to accurately identify and verify the licenses of miners operating within their jurisdiction. The workshop also emphasized the importance of providing timely and accurate information to relevant security agencies to curb illegal mining activities, a significant challenge in many African countries. Addressing the opening of the workshop, Emmanuel Anyimah, Deputy Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Minerals Commission in charge of Support Services, emphasized that this orientation was a core component of the Commission’s efforts to provide the water guards with the knowledge and tools to understand their mandates.
This initiative is part of Ghana’s move to implement the Sustainable Development Goals.
The Minerals Commission’s proactive approach to training and equipping the blue water guards highlights its commitment to fostering a well-regulated and sustainable mining environment. By enhancing the skills of those responsible for monitoring and enforcing mining regulations, the Commission is taking a vital step towards mitigating the risks associated with unregulated mining and promoting responsible resource management in Ghana.
