Lonestar Cell MTN Challenges Liberia’s Noise Pollution Fine in Court
Liberia’s leading telecom provider, Lonestar Cell MTN, is embroiled in a legal battle with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over a $15,000 fine for noise pollution. The dispute highlights growing environmental concerns and the impact of businesses on local communities in Liberia. The lawsuit, filed in Monrovia’s Civil Law Court, seeks to prevent the EPA from enforcing the penalty imposed on the company’s Congo Town facility.
The Noise Complaint and EPA’s Findings
The EPA levied the fine after what it described as “a series of scientific tests.” The EPA’s head, Emmanuel Yarkpawolo, stated that these tests revealed noise levels from Lonestar’s generator exceeding both local regulations and World Health Organization (WHO) standards. Adding to the EPA’s concerns, the agency had received numerous complaints from nearby residents who reported that the excessive noise from the facility had made their daily lives difficult and untenable. This case marks a first for Liberia, underscoring the country’s efforts to enforce environmental regulations.
