Meet Neibar: Africa’s Groundbreaking Free Digital Platform

Chris, a computer science student at Makerere University in Uganda, experienced a life-changing moment when a stranger on an app gifted him a much-needed laptop. This act of generosity is a testament to the power of Neibar, Africa’s inaugural digital platform where everything is completely free. Neibar is revolutionizing how communities share resources, enabling individuals like Chris to receive essential items, from home goods to school and workplace supplies, without any financial transaction.

Addressing Africa’s Waste Challenge Through Community Sharing

Across sub-Saharan Africa, the scale of household solid waste is staggering, with 174 million tonnes generated in 2016 and projections soaring to 244 million tonnes by 2025. This alarming trend is compounded by the fact that despite 70% to 80% of this waste being recyclable, a mere 4% actually undergoes the recycling process. This stark reality of massive waste accumulation coexisting with widespread community needs deeply resonated with software developer Roland Namwanza. He founded Neibar to confront this paradox head-on. As Namwanza explained to Techpoint Africa, it was “difficult to ignore the wastefulness co-existing with the apparent need in his community.” Eschewing the conventional model of buy-and-sell platforms, Neibar provides an innovative path for pre-owned items. It ensures these goods are not condemned to waste dumps and landfills but instead circulate freely and purposefully within communities, given away by those who no longer need them to those who do, completely free of charge.

Neibar stands out as a unique and impactful African tech innovation. By transforming what would otherwise become waste into valuable resources, this pioneering platform not only addresses critical environmental challenges related to solid waste management but also cultivates a powerful spirit of communal support and resourcefulness. As Africa’s first digital platform where everything is free, Neibar builds a crucial bridge between those who have surplus items and those who are in need, fostering a more sustainable and equitable future across the continent by emphasizing sharing over discarding.
