NCC Report: MTN Drives Nigerian Internet Subscriber Surge with Over 3.4 Million New Users

Nigeria’s mobile internet landscape continues its robust expansion, as evidenced by the latest figures from the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). According to the NCC’s recent industry statistics, the nation witnessed a substantial increase in GSM internet subscribers during April, adding a remarkable 3,568,205 new users. This surge elevated the total number of GSM internet subscribers to an impressive 119,506,430, a significant leap from the 115,938,225 recorded in March, underscoring the relentless growth in Nigeria’s mobile data adoption.

Key Players and Their Performance in April

Leading the charge in this significant growth was MTN, Nigeria’s foremost telecommunications operator, which captured the lion’s share of new subscribers. MTN alone accounted for 3,474,208 new internet users, solidifying its dominant position as the market leader. This substantial gain propelled MTN’s total internet subscriber base from 46,552,185 in March to a new high of 50,026,393 in April. Following MTN, Globacom emerged as the second-highest gainer, welcoming 191,005 new internet users and increasing its total subscriptions from 28,436,386 in March to 28,627,391 in April. Airtel also contributed to the growth, adding 94,412 new subscribers, bringing its total to 31,337,657. In stark contrast, 9mobile continued its challenging trajectory, experiencing a loss of 201,050 subscribers, with its total base dwindling to 9,441,343. New entrant Visafone, however, managed to secure a modest gain of 9,570 subscribers in the same period.

These NCC industry statistics paint a clear picture of a dynamic and competitive Nigerian telecom market. While overall mobile data penetration continues its upward trend, propelled significantly by market giants like MTN, the varying performances among operators highlight shifting user preferences and ongoing competitive pressures. MTN’s exceptional growth in April reaffirms its strategic strength and broad appeal, setting a strong pace for the continued expansion of internet access across Nigeria.
