The seller of his electric motorcycle couldn’t help, and his regular auto workshop also refused, citing a lack of transportation to a proper recycling facility. This highlights the lack of a developed recycling infrastructure in Colombia, an issue that poses challenges for EV owners. Despite a strong regulatory framework, the absence of accessible and efficient battery recycling solutions is a significant hurdle. In the last year, the Colombian market saw over 9,000 electric vehicles sold, a 150% increase from 2023. At least five battery recycling companies have emerged in recent years, aiming to create a sustainable industry in Latin America to curb emissions. These startups currently process thousands of tons of e-waste, but they are still struggling to keep up with the rising demand.
