Essaouira Scorches: Morocco Grapples with Extreme Heatwave, Four Cities Among World’s Hottest
Morocco experienced an intense heatwave on Tuesday, with several of its cities registering among the highest temperatures globally. This unprecedented heat highlights the growing impact of climate change across North Africa, causing significant concerns for public health and the environment. The alarming data, sourced from weather tracking platform Eldorado Weather, paints a stark picture of the severity of the situation.
Essaouira and Other Moroccan Cities Face Record-Breaking Temperatures
Essaouira emerged as the second-hottest location worldwide on Tuesday, with temperatures soaring to a blistering 47.9°C. Several other Moroccan cities also endured extreme heat, positioning them among the top 15 hottest places globally. Taroudant recorded 47.2°C, securing sixth place, followed by Smara at 47.1°C in seventh place. Safi also made the list, ranking 11th with a temperature of 46.5°C. The highest temperature of the day was recorded in Al-Ahsa, Saudi Arabia, reaching 48.9°C, further illustrating the widespread nature of the heatwave across the Middle East and North Africa. Other cities in the region, including those in Saudi Arabia, Iran, Qatar, and Egypt, also faced punishing heat conditions, contributing to a dangerous situation throughout the region. These temperature readings, which are becoming increasingly common for Morocco, are far above typical seasonal averages.
The extreme heat faced by these Moroccan cities, and the wider region, emphasizes the need for enhanced climate resilience measures and urgent action to mitigate the effects of climate change. The data indicates a concerning trend that requires careful monitoring and proactive strategies to safeguard the well-being of the population and protect the environment.
