KIA Traffic Soars to 3.2 Million in 2024, Fueling Growth and Security Concerns

Kotoka International Airport (KIA) in Ghana experienced a significant surge in passenger traffic during 2024, welcoming a total of 3.2 million travelers. This impressive figure highlights Ghana’s increasing prominence as a pivotal hub for regional travel, investment opportunities, and the flourishing tourism sector. The growth is largely attributed to positive shifts in the country’s economic landscape, heightened international interest, and a notable increase in overall business activities.

Security Challenges Arise from Increased Passenger Volumes

While the rise in passenger numbers signals positive progress for Ghana, it simultaneously presents new challenges, specifically related to border security. Francis Bullen Gavor, the Chief Executive Officer of Rock Africa and the Coordinator of the API/PNR project, brought this critical issue to the forefront. He noted that the substantial increase in passenger volume encompasses not only tourists and investors, but also individuals potentially involved in illegal activities. These individuals may include drug traffickers, individuals suspected of financial crimes, and those on international watch lists. During the commissioning of the Air Navigation System Complex and the new API/PNR Operations Centre on Monday, August 4, 2025, Gavor stressed the importance of robust security systems in place to combat the potential risks that arise from the increase in passengers.

In conclusion, the increased passenger traffic at KIA signifies both the promising growth of Ghana’s economy and the growing importance of robust and efficient security protocols to protect the nation from security threats.
