Tunisia Investigates Illegal Dissemination of Child Images at Festivals

Following reports of photos and videos circulating on social media that allegedly depict children in undignified situations during summer festivals, the Tunisian Ministry of Family, Women, Children and the Elderly has launched an investigation. The images, shared outside any legal framework, raised concerns about the protection of minors. The Minister has tasked the General Delegate for Child Protection with petitioning the public prosecutor to authorize the investigation.

Protecting Children’s Rights in Tunisia

The ministry emphasizes that safeguarding children from all threats, regardless of origin, is a collective responsibility mandated by Article 52 of the Tunisian Constitution. The unauthorized distribution of images of minors is a clear violation of Organic Law No. 63 of 2004 concerning the protection of personal data. Furthermore, it infringes upon the principles of the child’s best interests as defined by the Child Protection Code (Law No. 92 of 1995 dated November 9, 1995).

This investigation underscores Tunisia’s commitment to upholding child protection laws and ensuring the responsible use of digital media, especially concerning vulnerable populations. It serves as a reminder of the ethical considerations surrounding the capture and sharing of images, particularly in public spaces and at events where children are present.
