Ghanaian Telcos on Notice: Brace for Fines Over Poor Network Service

Ghanaian mobile network operators (MNOs) have been put on high alert by the government, facing potential hefty fines if network service quality doesn’t improve drastically by the end of the third quarter of 2025. This ultimatum comes directly from the Minister of Communication, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, who addressed the issue during the Government Accountability Series on August 1, 2025. The government acknowledges widespread customer complaints regarding unreliable network connectivity and is taking a firm stance.

Imminent Consequences for Non-Compliance

Minister George emphasized that MNOs have been provided with additional spectrum specifically to facilitate network upgrades and enhance service delivery. He stated that beginning in the fourth quarter of 2025, the Ministry, through the National Communications Authority (NCA), will conduct rigorous assessments of network quality. Companies failing to meet the established standards will face significant financial penalties. The Minister made it clear that the government is prepared to enforce these penalties to ensure Ghanaian consumers receive the network service they deserve.

The clock is ticking for telcos operating in Ghana. With the threat of substantial fines looming, the pressure is on to invest in infrastructure improvements and deliver tangible improvements in network performance before the deadline. The government’s firm stance reflects a growing demand for reliable connectivity in Ghana’s increasingly digital economy.
