Nigerian Copyright Commission Suspends MovieBox.ng Over Piracy

In a decisive move against online piracy, the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has suspended MovieBox.ng, a free streaming platform known for distributing copyrighted material without authorization. This action underscores the NCC’s commitment to protecting Nigeria’s burgeoning creative industry from the damaging effects of unauthorized content distribution. The suspension, announced late Thursday, represents a significant escalation in the ongoing battle against piracy within the Nigerian digital landscape.

Cracking Down on Copyright Infringement

The NCC, working in conjunction with the Nigeria Internet Registration Association (NiRA), successfully secured the suspension of MovieBox.ng. The platform had gained notoriety for illegally streaming pirated movies, music, and live sports events, both domestic and international. According to an official statement from the NCC, “The suspension targets an online site known for hosting copyrighted materials without permission.” The suspension took effect on July 20, 2025, as confirmed by Dr. John Asein, the Director General of the NCC. Dr. Asein highlighted the platform’s direct violation of the Copyright Act 2022, legislation designed to strengthen protections for digital content creators and rights holders within Nigeria. MovieBox.ng provided unauthorized content, thereby infringing upon the rights of copyright owners and undermining the legitimate distribution channels within the creative sector.

The suspension of MovieBox.ng serves as a strong warning to other platforms engaged in similar practices. The NCC’s action signals a renewed commitment to enforcing copyright law and protecting the interests of Nigeria’s creative industry, fostering a more sustainable and legally compliant digital environment for content creators.
