In a decisive move against online piracy, the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) has suspended MovieBox.ng, a free streaming platform known for distributing copyrighted material without authorization. According to an official statement from the NCC, “The suspension targets an online site known for hosting copyrighted materials without permission.” The suspension took effect on July 20, 2025, as confirmed by Dr. John Asein, the Director General of the NCC. Dr. Asein highlighted the platform’s direct violation of the Copyright Act 2022, legislation designed to strengthen protections for digital content creators and rights holders within Nigeria. MovieBox.ng provided unauthorized content, thereby infringing upon the rights of copyright owners and undermining the legitimate distribution channels within the creative sector.
