Nigeria’s National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), the federal body overseeing national identity, has officially launched its new verification platform, NINAuth. Announced on June 30, the platform marks a significant shift in how personal data is managed, following the successful migration of identity data from older systems. This development aims to place the control of sensitive identity information firmly back into the hands of Nigerian citizens, addressing long-standing concerns about data privacy and security within the country’s digital ecosystem. A New Era for Identity Verification
At its core, NINAuth is designed to empower Nigerians by granting them direct authority over their National Identification Number (NIN) data. The platform introduces a tokenization feature, which allows individuals to directly authorize businesses and organizations that request their NIN for verification purposes. This system effectively removes the intermediaries that previously handled these verification processes. By creating a direct channel between the user and the requesting entity, NINAuth significantly minimizes the risk of data breaches and leaks commonly associated with third-party data handling. Furthermore, this streamlined approach is set to dramatically speed up authentication times. NIMC has confirmed that NINAuth will now serve as the mandatory standard for all identity verification requests involving the NIN.
This initiative builds upon the government’s push for a unified identity system, which gained major prominence in 2019 when a directive was issued for all SIM cards to be linked to a valid NIN. With NINAuth, the framework supporting this national identity number is now more secure and user-centric. By giving citizens the tools to manage their own data authorizations, Nigeria is taking a crucial step towards fostering greater trust and security in its rapidly expanding digital economy.
