How Relentless Vandalism Cripples Nigeria’s Telecom Sites

Nigeria’s telecommunications infrastructure is under constant siege. For industry leaders like Yahaya Ibrahim, the Chief Technical Officer of MTN Nigeria, the alerts are a grim, daily reality. On a single Wednesday in July 2025, two separate telecom sites were vandalized before 1:00 p.m., a pattern that repeats with alarming regularity. This relentless destruction is not an occasional nuisance but a national crisis, with Ibrahim confirming that “at least two sites are vandalised every day.” This ongoing sabotage directly threatens the stability of communication services for millions of Nigerians, creating a persistent state of disruption for the nation’s digital backbone.

The Escalating Crisis of Telecom Sabotage

The wave of vandalism has become an epidemic affecting all major operators, including network providers like MTN and infrastructure companies such as IHS Towers and MainOne. The attacks are widespread, with rampant incidents of site vandalism, critical cable theft, and damaging fibre cuts reported across the country. States including Abia, Akwa Ibom, Ekiti, and Rivers have emerged as particular hotspots for these criminal activities. Initially, thefts focused on valuable components like power cables and backup batteries. However, the scope of the problem has escalated significantly, with criminals now targeting and stealing essential core transmission and radio equipment, crippling the operational capacity of the telecom towers and directly impacting network quality and availability.

This systematic destruction poses a severe threat to Nigeria’s digital economy and connectivity. The constant need to repair and replace stolen equipment places an immense financial and logistical burden on telecom operators, diverting resources that could be used for network expansion and improvement. Ultimately, the continuous attacks on these vital national assets undermine the very foundation of Nigeria’s digital future, disrupting communication, hindering economic activity, and jeopardizing the country’s progress in the global digital landscape.
