Safaricom Celebrates Landmark Achievement: Surpassing 50 Million Customers

Safaricom, a leading telecommunications company in Kenya, has announced a significant milestone, exceeding 50 million customers across its mobile network. This achievement underscores Safaricom’s enduring influence and dominance in the Kenyan market, showcasing its impressive growth trajectory since its inception. Furthermore, the announcement highlights the company’s commitment to connecting people and driving technological advancement across Africa.

A Quarter-Century of Growth and Expansion

This milestone marks a remarkable journey for Safaricom, which commenced operations in 2000 with a mere 17,000 customers. The company’s success is attributed to its customer-centric approach and innovative offerings, solidifying its position as a telecommunications powerhouse. Beyond Kenya, Safaricom’s expansion into Ethiopia has yielded impressive results, with over 10 million customers reached as of July 2025. This expansion aligns with Safaricom’s ambition to become Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company by 2030. Group CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa expressed his gratitude, stating that the company is “honoured by the trust that over 50 million Kenyans have placed in us,” emphasizing their commitment to creating a positive impact and innovation for their customers. The company attributed this success in part to their year-long customer engagement initiative launched last year. Meanwhile, Airtel, Safaricom’s closest competitor, recently announced 24 million subscribers, underscoring Kenya’s rising mobile penetration fueled by affordable devices and a widening consumer base.
