Tizi Ouzou: Sidi Khelifa Desalination Plant Project Nears Launch

The wilaya of Tizi Ouzou, Algeria, is poised to address its water scarcity issues with the upcoming construction of a major seawater desalination plant. Located in Sidi Khelifa, within the Aït Chafaâ commune, near Azeffoun in eastern Tizi Ouzou, the project aims to significantly boost the region’s water supply. This initiative will bolster the region’s water security, a crucial element for sustainable development in the context of a changing climate and growing populations. The plant is designed to produce a substantial 300,000 cubic meters of water daily.

Overcoming Challenges: Progress and Project Scope

The Algerian Energy Company (AEC), a subsidiary of Sonatrach, is spearheading the desalination project. The project has faced delays, primarily due to concerns regarding the terrain. However, after several meetings held at the wilaya headquarters, an agreement appears to have been reached, paving the way for the project’s launch. The initial site is currently scheduled to be taken over by the main contractor, according to the newspaper El Watan, published on July 24th. Furthermore, the project’s overall footprint, including the contractor’s base of operations, has been expanded. The total area is now estimated at 30 hectares, a decision made following the wali’s directive to resolve any outstanding issues.

The Sidi Khelifa desalination project represents a significant infrastructure investment for Tizi Ouzou, contributing to water sustainability and long-term resilience within the region.
