Algeria and Italy Forge Partnership for Green Steel Production

During Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s recent visit to Italy, a significant agreement was reached between the Algerian company Copresud and the Italian Consortium Electroside for Pre-Reduced Iron (CEIP Scarl). This partnership, reported by the Italian news agency “Agenzia Nova,” marks a crucial step towards developing a sustainable steel industry in Algeria, potentially impacting the African steel sector.

Feasibility Study for Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) Plant

The core of the agreement centers on a joint feasibility study for constructing a Direct Reduced Iron (DRI) production plant in Algeria. CEIP Scarl, established in 2022, is a consortium of 12 Italian steel mills that utilize electric arc furnaces. The primary goal for the consortium is to secure a reliable supply of DRI, a vital component in Italian steel production. The study will examine the technical and economic viability of establishing this plant in Algeria. Furthermore, the project specifically considers the integration of renewable energy sources and a gradual introduction of green hydrogen into the production processes. This environmentally conscious approach aligns with the global push to reduce emissions within heavy industries, presenting a modern approach to industrial development in Africa. The partnership underscores the commitment of both nations to embrace sustainable practices within the steel industry.

This agreement between Algeria and Italy reflects a proactive approach toward cleaner and more efficient steel production. The collaboration has the potential to bolster Algeria’s industrial capacity and contribute to environmental sustainability within the region.
