BasiGo Drives Electric Matatus Into Regional Kenya

BasiGo, a leader in electric mobility in Sub-Saharan Africa, has just taken a significant leap forward in revolutionizing Kenya’s public transportation. The company has launched the nation’s first pilot program for electric matatus on inter-city routes, expanding clean and reliable public transport solutions beyond the capital city. This initiative, a collaboration with 4NTE SACCO and Manchester Travellers Coach SACCO, marks a key step towards wider adoption of electric vehicles and a more sustainable transport system.

Expanding Connectivity: New Routes and Charging Infrastructure

The program introduces electric vans to several key regional routes. 4NTE SACCO will deploy BasiGo electric matatus on routes connecting Nyahururu, Nyeri, and Nakuru, while Manchester SACCO will operate on the Thika-Nairobi corridor. Each van is equipped with a substantial range of up to 300 kilometers on a single charge and requires only a 1.5-hour recharge. To facilitate smooth operation and ensure vehicles are always ready for the road, BasiGo has installed charging stations in Nyahururu and Thika. The electric matatus are available through BasiGo’s innovative Pay-As-You-Drive lease model, which aims to reduce the financial barrier for operators.

This exciting development signals a positive shift toward cleaner, more accessible, and regionally connected transport networks across Kenyan cities.
