Young Scientists Kenya Empowers Teachers with AI Skills
Young Scientists Kenya (YSK), a collaborative effort between Kenya’s Ministry of Education and the Government of Ireland, spearheaded by the Irish Embassy in Kenya, is making strides in fostering technological advancement within the country. In partnership with the Raspberry Pi Foundation, YSK is actively training secondary school teachers across Kenya in the vital field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). This initiative aims to equip educators with the knowledge and practical skills necessary to integrate AI literacy into their classrooms.
Experience AI: A Nationwide Initiative
The AI literacy program, known as Experience AI, has already made significant impact. Over the past six months, YSK has successfully trained 170 secondary school teachers in AI, spanning Nakuru, Mandera, Tana River, and Wajir counties in Kenya. The program’s reach extends beyond the teachers themselves; it’s estimated that around 3,400 students across the country have already benefited from this training. Dr. Victor Mwongera, YSK National Director, emphasized the importance of this investment, stating that “Investing in STEM education is critical to Kenya’s future.” He added that training teachers is strategic, “By equipping educators with hands-on skills and tools, we ensure they are not just facilitators but active drivers of technological literacy in the classroom.” The program is supported by the Raspberry Pi Foundation and funded by Google.org, highlighting a collaborative approach to boosting STEM education in Kenya.
In conclusion, Young Scientists Kenya’s commitment to empowering teachers with AI skills underscores a crucial step towards building a digitally literate future for Kenyan youth. This initiative, supported by international partnerships and funding, demonstrates a proactive approach to bridging the technological skills gap and driving innovation within the African tech landscape.
