Algeria Invests in Green Cement Production, Driving Industrial Decarbonization
Algeria is taking a significant step towards decarbonizing its cement industry by investing in the construction of new green cement production facilities. Industry Minister Sifi Ghrieb announced the launch of this initiative in Algiers, highlighting the commitment to sustainable manufacturing practices. This move reflects Algeria’s dedication to embracing eco-friendly technologies and reducing its carbon footprint within the construction sector. This initiative is particularly noteworthy within the African context, demonstrating a proactive approach to sustainable industrial development.
Expanding Green Cement Capacity Across Algeria
The project encompasses the development of two new green cement plants and the expansion of an existing facility. Specifically, new factories will be built in the wilayas of Djelfa and Relizane. The Djelfa plant is slated to have an initial production capacity of 1.5 million tonnes of green cement, while the Relizane factory will start with a capacity of 2 million tonnes. Furthermore, the existing plant in Adrar will be upgraded with a second production line dedicated to green cement, adding an estimated 1.5 million tonnes to its output. The minister made these announcements during an opening workshop dedicated to the market of green cement.
This expansion underscores Algeria’s commitment to sustainable development and positions the nation as a potential leader in green building materials within the African continent.
