Ghanaian Car Rental Association Seeks Government Aid for Sector Revitalization

The Car Rental Association of Ghana (CRAG) has requested GH¢10 million in financial assistance from the Ghanaian government. The association believes this support is crucial to revitalizing the car rental industry, enhancing operational efficiency, and boosting both tourism and transport services within Ghana. This appeal, made on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Madam Ablah Dzifa Gomashie, highlights the current challenges facing the sector.

Proposed Government Support and Industry Challenges

CRAG’s proposal encompasses a range of financial incentives. These include soft loans, tax breaks, exemptions on import duties for electric vehicles, VAT reliefs, and a 30% corporate tax rebate for companies with at least 40% green fleets. Michael Sarpong, President of CRAG, emphasized that these measures are vital for strengthening the sector. Established in 1998, CRAG operates under challenges such as weak regulatory frameworks, concerns regarding vehicle safety, and issues surrounding driving standards. These issues contribute to an elevated accident rate, underscoring the urgent need for reform. The Association also implored the Minister to advocate for mandatory training and certification programs for car rental operators, with the aim of improving road safety and building trust among tourists. This is particularly important for Ghana’s efforts to attract more tourists.

In conclusion, CRAG’s appeal for government support underscores the critical importance of investing in Ghana’s transportation and tourism infrastructure. The proposed financial incentives, if implemented, have the potential to significantly improve the car rental industry, fostering a safer and more efficient environment for both operators and customers. This proactive approach by CRAG demonstrates a commitment to the long-term growth and sustainability of this key sector.
