Ethiopia Modernizes Tax Law to Embrace the Digital Economy
Ethiopia’s House of Peoples’ Representatives has approved a significant amendment to the Federal Income Tax Proclamation, representing a pivotal step toward modernizing its fiscal policies. The decision, finalized during an emergency session, demonstrates the government’s commitment to adapting its financial framework to align with the rapidly evolving digital economy. This move is particularly relevant within the context of Africa’s growing tech landscape, which demands adaptable and forward-thinking regulatory approaches.
Adapting to Digital Realities
The primary goal of the revised proclamation is to establish a more responsive and inclusive tax system. The amendment specifically targets the integration of the digital economy, which encompasses platform-based and online economic activities. Desalegn Wedaje, Chair of the Standing Committee on Planning, Budget, and Finance, highlighted the outdated nature of the previous tax law, which had been in effect for years. He stressed that the amendment introduces a new tax framework better equipped to regulate the burgeoning digital and platform-based economic activities. This evolution is crucial for effectively mobilizing revenue and ensuring the financial stability of the nation in this era of digital transformation, especially as Ethiopia aims to become a regional hub for digital innovation.
The updated tax law is expected to have a significant effect on digital businesses within Ethiopia.
