Ethiopia Launches Its First Securities Exchange, Modernizing Financial Infrastructure

The historic launch ceremony took place at the Sheraton Addis Hotel, drawing together key players in the Ethiopian financial ecosystem. Organized in collaboration with the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE), the Ethiopian Capital Market Authority (ECMA), and the Ethiopian Securities Exchange (ESX), the event witnessed the symbolic ringing of the opening bell by senior financial policymakers, bankers, and market participants. The new platform allows for the electronic trading of T-bills, which previously existed as physical certificates, representing a major upgrade to the nation’s financial infrastructure. Finance Minister Ahmed Shide highlighted the significance of this development, calling it a “historic shift in how Ethiopia mobilizes domestic capital”.
