Scaling Nigerian Tech: Lessons from the Global Stage
The digital world has shrunk significantly, connecting talent across geographical boundaries. My experience mentoring a budding UX designer in the UK from my base in Nigeria highlighted the irrelevance of physical location in determining skill or potential. This mentorship led to a significant achievement: the mentee, who previously lacked a design background, secured an entry-level role at the BBC UK. This success underscored a core belief: competence transcends geographical constraints. The African tech ecosystem, particularly in Nigeria, is brimming with potential, and we can learn from global playbooks to fuel its growth.
Navigating the Nigerian Tech Landscape
Nigerian designers, in particular, frequently navigate challenging environments. They operate with lean teams and processes, addressing the complexities of designing products for a diverse range of devices, infrastructure limitations, and user behaviors. Their work extends beyond mere screen design. It involves solving for critical factors like affordability, accessibility, and trust, addressing unique product requirements for the local market, making their skill sets highly adaptable and valuable.
The Nigerian tech sector has huge growth potential with a focus on innovation that addresses local needs and provides global solutions. The success of African tech is on the rise and has the potential to reach new heights with a global reach.
The success highlights that geography is not a measure of competence.
