Remembering Abiola Olaniran: A Tribute to the Gamsole Founder and African Tech Pioneer

The African tech ecosystem is in mourning following the untimely passing of Abiola Olaniran, the innovative software engineer and founder of mobile gaming powerhouse, Gamsole. Olaniran passed away on Wednesday, July 16, at the age of 36. Sources close to the family have confirmed that he was buried in a private ceremony on the same day. Known for his soft-spoken nature, Olaniran was a monumental figure whose work transformed a personal coding hobby into one of Africa’s most recognized mobile-gaming brands, leaving an indelible mark on the industry.

From University Triumph to a Global Gaming Footprint

Despite preferring to stay out of the limelight, Abiola Olaniran’s career achievements read like a chronicle of Africa’s burgeoning tech scene. His path to prominence began in 2010 when he led his team from Obafemi Awolowo University to national victory in the prestigious Microsoft Imagine Cup. Galvanized by this success, he fully committed to game development, founding Gamsole in Lagos just two years later. At a time when the African gaming landscape was virtually non-existent, he strategically chose the new Windows Phone store as his launchpad. From there, he consistently produced colourful and engaging casual titles that resonated with a global audience, extending well beyond Nigeria’s borders. By early 2015, Gamsole had achieved a phenomenal milestone, crossing 10 million downloads across Windows Phone, Android, and even feature-phone app stores. This success was a landmark moment that brought significant global attention to both his company and the potential of African game development.

Abiola Olaniran’s journey exemplifies the spirit of innovation that defines African tech. His legacy is not just in the millions of downloads but in his pioneering vision that built a globally respected company from the ground up. He demonstrated that world-class tech products could emerge from Africa, paving the way for countless others. As Techpoint Africa’s first angel investor, he also played a crucial role in nurturing the ecosystem that he helped build. His quiet determination and immense contributions have secured his place as a true icon of African technology, and his presence will be profoundly missed.
