Tunisia Accelerates Solar Adoption by Simplifying STEG Grid Connections

The Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (STEG) is taking a significant step to advance the nation’s renewable energy goals by implementing new measures to streamline the grid connection process for photovoltaic (PV) power plants. This strategic initiative is designed to simplify complex procedures, drastically shorten waiting times, and ultimately encourage the wider adoption of solar energy across Tunisia. The move directly addresses long-standing complaints from developers and installers about bureaucratic delays that have previously hindered the growth of the renewable sector.

Overhauling a Cumbersome Process

Previously, connecting solar projects to the national grid was a process widely regarded as slow and burdensome. The administrative delays were a major bottleneck, with connection wait times reaching up to 90 days for small, low-voltage installations. For larger, medium-voltage solar projects, the wait could extend to a full year. To resolve this, STEG has introduced key reforms. Each regional directorate will now appoint a single point of contact responsible for managing each connection application from start to finish. This ensures installers have a direct and consistent line of communication, saving valuable time and preventing confusion. Furthermore, accessing essential customer electricity consumption data has been simplified; installers can now request this vital information through a dedicated email address provided by each regional STEG office.

These reforms represent a pivotal move by STEG to remove administrative barriers and create a more favorable environment for Tunisia’s solar industry. By centralizing communication and simplifying data access, the utility is directly addressing the core challenges that slowed down renewable energy deployment. This streamlined approach is expected to significantly accelerate the connection of solar power facilities, supporting both private and commercial energy projects and contributing directly to Tunisia’s broader strategy for a sustainable energy future.
