Bank of Ghana Governor Launches Personal Appeal to Fight Fake Currency

In a bold move to protect Ghana’s economic stability, the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), Dr. Johnson Asiama, has made a direct appeal to the public for assistance in combating counterfeit currency. He is encouraging citizens to report individuals involved in producing or circulating fake money by sending him a message directly on WhatsApp. This initiative addresses the growing concern that counterfeiting is a major factor contributing to the depreciation of the Ghanaian cedi and threatening the country’s financial system.

A Direct Line to Combat Counterfeiting

Dr. Asiama stressed the severe impact of counterfeit notes on the national economy, explaining that their circulation undermines the value of the cedi. He confirmed that the central bank has received reports about illegal currency production operations, particularly within the capital city of Accra. “Recently, I heard a story about individuals involved in counterfeiting currency somewhere in Accra. These people are producing fake notes illegally,” he stated. The Governor warned that if such criminal activities are left unchecked, the continued decline of the cedi should be expected. To empower the public, he offered a simple and direct channel for reporting, saying, “If you find anyone engaging in currency counterfeiting, whether it’s the cedi, the dollar, or any other currency, please, my phone number is all over the place. Send me a WhatsApp.”

This call to action from the BoG Governor highlights a new strategy that leverages technology and citizen vigilance to tackle a persistent economic threat. By creating a direct line of communication, the Bank of Ghana aims to gather intelligence more effectively and act swiftly against criminals. The public’s participation is now positioned as a critical component in the collective effort to safeguard the integrity of the nation’s currency and support the stability of the Ghanaian economy.
