Tunisia’s SONEDE Embraces Electronic Payments. in 2025
After what seems like an eternity, Tunisia’s national water distribution company, SONEDE, has proudly announced the rollout of Electronic Payment Terminals (TPEs) across all of its branches nationwide. This marks a significant, albeit delayed, step towards modernizing payment options for Tunisian citizens.
SONEDE Joins the 21st Century
In 2025, SONEDE is finally catching up with technological advancements by introducing card payments. The utility company assures its customers that this new system will offer “easier, safer, and more comfortable” payment experiences, moving away from traditional cash payments and long queues at teller windows. In a statement brimming with the pride of bridging a multi-decade technology gap, SONEDE emphasizes that this initiative is designed to “improve the quality of its services and simplify payment procedures.” This long-awaited modernization promises to streamline the payment process for water services across Tunisia.
While the introduction of electronic payments is a welcome development, it raises questions about the consistency of water supply itself. One can only hope that the reliability of water services will match the efficiency of the new payment system.
