Nigerian Startups See Significant Dip in Q2 2025 Equity Funding

The second quarter of 2025 has presented a challenging landscape for the Nigerian startup ecosystem, particularly concerning venture capital inflows. According to the latest State of Venture report from global tech analytics firm CB Insights, Nigerian startups secured a mere $26 million in equity funding during this period. This figure represents a paltry 8.7 percent of the more than $300 million raised by African startups continent-wide in Q2 2025, underscoring a notable slowdown for the West African tech hub.

# Analyzing the Decline in Venture Capital

The $26 million garnered in Q2 2025 marks the slowest quarter for Nigerian equity funding over the last three quarters, mirroring a broader continental pivot from equity towards debt financing. Comparing this performance to the preceding quarter, Q2’s total equity funding reflects an 18.75 percent drop from the $32 million recorded in Q1 2025. The decline becomes even more pronounced when viewed against Q4 2024, a period when Nigerian startups attracted a robust $137 million. This stark comparison reveals a monumental 81 percent decline, signaling a significant shift in investor sentiment and funding dynamics. A substantial portion of the Q2 funding was contributed by Nigerian solar energy firm Arnergy, which secured an $18 million Series round, highlighting the critical role a few large deals play in the overall funding landscape amidst a general downturn.

This significant reduction in venture capital for Nigerian tech startups in Q2 2025 raises questions about the immediate future of the ecosystem. While the shift to debt funding might offer alternative avenues, the dramatic decrease in equity investment suggests a more cautious approach from investors and a period of recalibration for startups seeking growth capital.
