Starlink Router Price Slashes to N440,000 Amidst Naira Appreciation in Nigeria

Internet connectivity in Nigeria just became more accessible as Starlink, the satellite internet provider, announced a significant reduction in the price of its hardware. The cost of the Starlink router has been cut to N440,000, a move directly attributed to the recent strengthening of the Nigerian Naira against the US Dollar. This development is a welcome relief for prospective users across the nation.

Starlink Price Adjustment Reflects Naira’s Recovery

The new N440,000 price tag represents a substantial 45 percent reduction from the N800,000 the hardware router commanded as recently as Monday. Starlink confirmed this new pricing in an update, affirming that the monthly subscription fee for its high-speed internet service will remain unchanged at N38,000. On its website, the company clearly stated, “N440,000 new hardware price. Unlimited high-speed internet for N38,000 per month. Available everywhere in Nigeria.” This drastic price drop follows a period of significant volatility. In February 2024, the Starlink router was sold for N378,000. However, an increment regime implemented in early March saw the price soar to N800,000. This increase was a direct response to the rapid depreciation of the Naira, which plummeted to as low as N1900 to a dollar. The Nigerian currency has since experienced a remarkable appreciation from those record lows near N2,000/$, strengthening to N1230.61/$ as of April 8, 2024, on the official window. This marks the second time Starlink has adjusted its pricing in response to the Naira’s fluctuating value.

This strategic price cut by Starlink underscores the direct impact of exchange rate stability on the cost of imported goods and services in Nigeria. For Nigerian consumers, this makes high-speed satellite internet, a crucial enabler for remote work, education, and digital inclusion, significantly more affordable. It highlights how a recovering Naira can translate into tangible benefits for the general populace, fostering greater digital adoption across the vast expanse of Nigeria.
