Inside the Eight: DDoS Attacks Cripple African Tech Infrastructure

The African technology landscape faced a severe test in the summer of 2023, as Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks brought significant disruption to critical services across several nations. These cyber assaults, meticulously planned and executed, targeted both public and private sector entities, highlighting the increasing vulnerability of African digital infrastructure. The attacks showcased the escalating sophistication of malicious actors and the need for robust cybersecurity measures continent-wide.

The Assault on Telecom and Key Services

MTN Nigeria, a dominant telecom operator in the region, became a primary target on August 2, 2023. The company endured one of the most extensive DDoS attacks ever recorded against a West African corporate entity. The hacktivist group Anonymous Sudan claimed responsibility for the attack. This incident tested MTN Nigeria’s cybersecurity defenses. Before the Nigerian attack, Kenya had already been grappling with a similar wave of DDoS attacks. On July 27 and 28, vital online services were crippled. These attacks impacted government portals like eCitizen, disrupting access to essential government services. The electricity provider, Kenya Power and Lighting, also suffered, and prepaid token systems were taken offline. Banks, hospitals, and the widely used mobile money service M-Pesa were also significantly affected, demonstrating the broad impact these attacks had on daily life. Tanzania and other countries soon became victims. Shoyinka Shodunke, MTN Nigeria’s Chief Information Officer, noted the growing threat.

The coordinated nature of the attacks, affecting multiple countries and key services, signifies a growing need for enhanced cybersecurity protocols across the continent. The incidents emphasize the importance of proactive defense strategies, incident response plans, and international cooperation to safeguard African digital assets and protect the integrity of critical services.
