Pornhub Dominates “.onion” Searches on the Dark Web, Surpassing DuckDuckGo and ProtonMail

A recent report by web hosting provider Hostinger has unveiled a surprising ranking of the most visited “.onion” sites on the dark web and their associated risk levels within the Tor network. The findings highlight a diverse range of activities, from legitimate privacy practices to illicit marketplaces, revealing both unexpected uses and potential threats.

# Unexpected Top Ranking

Hostinger’s data indicates that Pornhub tops the list with approximately 49,500 monthly searches. This is followed by a tie between the privacy-focused search engine DuckDuckGo and the encrypted email service ProtonMail, both categorized as “low risk.” These findings underscore the complex and varied nature of dark web usage, where entertainment and privacy tools coexist. Behind these leading sites, password identification resources, scam forums such as Dread, and dark web marketplaces like Archetyp and Bohemia exhibit a higher risk level, although their traffic volume is considerably lower. This highlights the presence of illicit activities despite the higher popularity of other platforms.

In conclusion, the Hostinger report paints a fascinating picture of dark web usage. While concerns about illicit activities are valid, the prominence of platforms like Pornhub, DuckDuckGo, and ProtonMail demonstrates that the dark web is also utilized for entertainment and the pursuit of online privacy, showcasing the multifaceted nature of this hidden part of the internet.
