MultiChoice Adjusts Subscription Prices in Kenya: DStv & GOtv Up, Showmax Down

MultiChoice, the leading pay-TV provider in Africa, has announced adjustments to its subscription fees for DStv, GOtv, and Showmax in Kenya, effective August 1st, 2025. While DStv and GOtv subscribers will see price increases ranging from 4% to 7%, Showmax users will benefit from reduced subscription costs across different plans.

Price Hikes Amidst Shifting Market Dynamics

According to MultiChoice, the price adjustments are a result of increasing operational expenses and ongoing investments in both local and international content. The company stated that this review is part of their standard annual price adjustment process. However, these increases come at a time when many customers already perceive DStv and GOtv subscriptions as expensive. This perception is reflected in the company’s recent financial results, with a reported 1.2 million decrease in active subscribers, bringing the total to 14.5 million, and an 8% year-over-year drop in earnings. An example is the DStv Access plan, which saw its price increase from KES1,350.

The simultaneous price reduction for Showmax suggests a strategic move by MultiChoice to attract and retain subscribers in the increasingly competitive streaming market, where affordability plays a significant role in consumer choices. The contrasting adjustments highlight the different challenges and opportunities facing the company’s traditional pay-TV services and its streaming platform.
