MTN Nigeria Launches First Phase of $235 Million Data Centre, Boosting Cloud Infrastructure
MTN Nigeria has officially entered the commercial data hosting arena with the completion of Phase 1 of its ambitious $235 million Dabengwa Sifiso Data Centre. This Tier III facility represents a significant investment in Nigeria’s burgeoning digital infrastructure and underscores MTN’s commitment to strengthening its cloud services offerings. This move is expected to contribute significantly to the growth of Nigeria’s digital economy.
Dabengwa Sifiso Data Centre: A New Era for Data Hosting
The completed first phase of the Dabengwa Sifiso Data Centre boasts a 4.5MW IT load and occupies three floors, providing space for 780 racks. This initial investment of $100 million showcases MTN’s dedication to providing robust and reliable data solutions. Looking ahead, Phase 2, estimated at $135 million, will aim for Tier IV certification, the gold standard in uptime and redundancy. The completed facility will reach a total of 9MW capacity. Naming the data centre after former MTN Group CEO, Dabengwa Sifiso, highlights the company’s long-term vision for innovation in Africa. This strategically positions MTN as a major player in the increasingly competitive Nigerian data centre landscape.
MTN’s entry into the data centre market places them in direct competition with established players like MainOne (now Equinix), Rack Centre, Digital Realty (via Medallion), and Open Access Data Centres (OADC). However, MTN’s extensive network and existing customer base offer a distinct advantage, enabling them to rapidly scale and capture a significant share of the growing demand for data hosting and cloud services in the region. This investment is a clear signal of MTN’s confidence in the future of Nigeria’s digital economy and its commitment to providing the infrastructure needed to support its continued growth.
