Tema Oil Refinery Charts Course for Ambitious Comeback
Ghana’s Tema Oil Refinery (TOR) is embarking on a strategic revitalization plan, aiming to reclaim its position as a key player in the nation’s energy sector. Acting Managing Director Edmond Kombat outlined the refinery’s roadmap at the recent Ghana-China Business Summit in Accra, emphasizing the potential for strategic partnerships to fuel this ambitious turnaround. The revival is envisioned to contribute significantly to Ghana’s energy security and economic growth, aligning with the government’s broader economic vision.
TOR’s strategic location and existing infrastructure, including a substantial 1 million barrel storage capacity, provide a strong foundation for its resurgence. The refinery’s current production capacity stands at a competitive 45,000 barrels per stream day (bpsd), offering a solid base for future expansion.
Revitalizing Infrastructure and Boosting Capacity
A core component of TOR’s revival strategy involves the comprehensive rehabilitation of its key processing units. This includes the Crude Distillation Unit (CDU) and the Residue Fluid Catalytic Cracking Unit (RFCC), both essential for efficient oil refining. Additionally, critical pipeline maintenance and upgrades to the loading gantry are planned to streamline operations and enhance the refinery’s overall efficiency. These improvements are designed to not only restore operational capacity but also optimize performance for future demands.
The refinery is also exploring the installation of advanced machinery with the goal of doubling its existing production capacity. This expansion is crucial to meeting Ghana’s anticipated energy needs and solidifying TOR’s role in the domestic market. Such an investment would significantly reduce reliance on imported refined products and strengthen Ghana’s energy independence.
